Dana Goldstein, author of The Teacher Wars: A History of America’s Most Embattled Profession, spoke to Fresh Air about how teachers have become both “resented and idealized” over 200 years of history.
In the interview Goldstein explains how teaching became a woman’s profession:

"A lot of people are surprised to learn that back in 1800, 90 percent of American teachers were actually male. Today we know that actually 76 percent of [them are] female, so how did this huge flip happen?
The answer is that as school reformers began to realize in the 1820s that schooling should be compulsory — that parents should be forced to send their kids to school, and public education should be universal — they had to come up with a way to do this basically in an affordable manner, because raising taxes was just about as unpopular back then as it is now. So what we see is this alliance between politicians and education reformers in the early 19th century to redefine teaching as a female profession.
They do this in a couple ways: First, they argue that women are more moral in a Christian sense than men. They depict men as alcoholic, intemperate, lash-wielding, horrible teachers who are abusive to children. They make this argument that women can do a better job because they’re more naturally suited to spend time with kids, on a biological level. Then they are also quite explicit about the fact that [they] can pay women about 50 percent as much — and this is going to be a great thing for the taxpayer.”

Superman, black would be the coolest dude in the world. Imagine Sam Jackson in a cape. Running around. That would be a good movie.
I think what a lot of people don’t get is, these people aren’t real. If you cast a black dude as John F Kennedy, that’s wrong. If you cast a white dude as Martin Luther King, that’s wrong. These people aren’t real. The suits aren’t real. There aren’t really superheroes in the world.
At some point in time, you have to steep yourself in reality and say, ‘hey, it’s not about what they look like, it’s about casting a good actor in the role. If you’re sitting at home and you can’t see a black guy as Nick Fury, maybe there’s something wrong with you.

  5. [Rape TW] CeeLo Green defends alleged drink-spiking: It’s only ‘really’ rape when she’s conscious

Singer CeeLo Green has apologized after writing on Twitter that rape was only possible when the victim was conscious to remember the crime.

Last week, Green was sentenced to three years of probation on drug charges after he was accused of secretly slipping the drug ecstasy into a 33-year-old woman’s drink.

Following the sentencing, the singer took to Twitter to defend himself.

“People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” he wrote, according to Billboard.

“If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent,” a second tweet added.

Green, who is known for songs like “Fuck You,” later deleted his Twitter account, saying that he would “not allow that negative energy to loiter on my time line u still got it so keep it! I’m deleting this too.”

But by Monday, Green’s Twitter account was back online.

“Let me 1st praise god for exoneration fairness & freedom! Secondly I sincerely apologize for my comments being taken so far out of context,” he wrote.

“I only intended on a healthy exchange to help heal those who love me from the pain I had already caused from this. Please forgive me as it,” Green continued. “…was your support that got me thru this to begin with. I’d never condone the harm of any women. Thank you.”

Like seriously, why isn’t pole dancing an olympic sport? This is freakin gymnastics. This is strength and skill. This is not sexual whatsoever. Why does pole dancing have to be so stigmatised as a sexual thing that only strippers do? I have great respect for all people who can pull this off. This is art and beauty right here.

HEY FUN FACT: pole dancing is known as something strippers do because strippers invented it. And that’s okay! It’s okay to have respect for strippers and the hard work they put into what they do! Let’s stop trying to take the stripper part out of pole dancing so upperclass white girls can do it without being ~stigmatized~ because god forbid women be sexual.
